Hook & Ladder Company 17 went into service on January 1, 1874 on the site of their present quarters. In 1906 they relocated to temporary quarters at Alexander Avenue and 142 Street while their new (and present) 3-story/2 bay firehouse was built at 341 East 143 Street. The building is listed as a historic landmark. The original building also housed Ladder 17(2) (Second Section) until it was first disbanded in 1915, and again from 1970 to 1974 when L-17(2) was reorganized to help fight the "Battle of the Bronx". Ladder 17 is one of the most highly decorated ladder companies in all of New York City, with 18 Department Medals for Valor awarded to members, more than 20 unit citations since 1970.
