Engine Company 60

On January 1, 1895, Chief of Department Hugh Bonner signed the first page of the company journal, placing Engine Company 60 into service. Their quarters were located at 606 E. 137 Street (now 352 E. 137) in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Engine 60 moved into their present quarters with Ladder 17 on November 1, 1948. In 1968, during the "Bronx Burning" years, Engine 60 was ranked as the 5th busiest firehouse in the world, with 6687 runs and 3232 workers. Since 1971, the company has been awarded 13 Unit Citations for outstanding performance at fire operations. Eight firefighters have been honored with Department medals for valor: Engineer of Steamer Patrick J. Lynch (1904), FF George J Wolken (James Gordon Bennet Medal - 1934), Lt. John V. Schneible (Department Medal - 1946), Capt. John T. A. Sweeney (Third Alarm Association Medal - 1964), FF Vincent A. Wallace (Emerald Society Medal - 1970), FF Dennis Hodges (Frank W. Kridel Medal - 1989), Lt. Michael Finer (Bella Steifel Medal- 1990), and FF Thomas J. Keeling (Capt. Denis W. Lane Memorial Medal - 1990).
